We are thrilled to announce the opening of "Birth of Democracy," a poignant photography exhibition featuring the works of Lisa Vollmer and Sabine von Falken. The exhibition will be on view from June 22nd to September 2nd, 2024.
"Birth of Democracy" is a timely show, presenting works created this spring. Central to the exhibition are landscapes created in Athens that embody peace, with the color green from the Ancient Agora Gardens being a prominent element in the imagery. Highlighting the show is a new piece from Lisa Vollmer's "Moving Scapes" series, which delves into the origins and ongoing evolution of democracy through the enduring lens of ancient Greek architecture and mythology. The exhibition features images of iconic structures such as the Temple of Athena, the Parthenon, and the Treasury of Athens at Delphi, reimagined into a symbolic temple that reflects our current era of instability and imbalance.
The columns depicted in the installation, typically symbols of stability and balance, are displayed in motion, echoing contemporary concerns about the state of democracy in light of global elections and the upcoming elections in the United States. This piece invites viewers to ponder the fragility and resilience of democratic principles.
Additionally, Lisa Vollmer will debut her first short video piece during the opening weekend, offering an exciting new dimension to her work.
Also featured in the gallery works by Sabine von Falken, titled “Democracy” and “Peace,” specifically created for this exhibition. These photographs are part of her ongoing Britannica series.
The opening reception on June 22nd from 3:00 to 6:00 PM at the Lisa Vollmer Photography Gallery will provide guests with the unique opportunity to meet and engage with both artists, gaining deeper insights into the inspiration and creative processes behind their work.
